Ongoing Dust, High Energy Bills, or Comfort Problems That Never Fully Go Away?

Leaky or poor duct systems are a common contributor — but testing is the best way to know what’s actually happening in your home.

This is worth checking if you’re dealing with:

  • One room never matches the rest of the home
  • The A/C runs longer than it should
  • Utility bills are high without a clear reason
  • The home feels dusty, or filters load up fast
  • You notice unknown smells
  • Dust levels change noticeably throughout the year

Duct leakage is only one possible cause — but it’s one of the most important to measure and rule in or out.

In some homes, building air leakage can also contribute to comfort and efficiency problems.

What Duct Leakage Testing Often Reveals

In many homes we test, a noticeable amount of conditioned air never reaches the rooms where it’s needed. Instead, it leaks into attics, wall cavities, or unused spaces. At the same time, leaky returns can pull hot, dusty air into the system, making comfort problems harder to solve and increasing energy use.

Duct leakage testing helps locate where and how much air is being lost or pulled into duct system before any sealing work is done.

Unsealed duct connections like this allow conditioned air to escape and worse is unconditioned air enters the system.

The same connection after proper sealing, preventing efficiency loss and unwanted attic air from entering the system through the return.

In more severe cases, flex ducts can tear or disconnect completely, sending conditioned air and comfort into the attic or crawlspace.

When duct sealing often helps

  • Air leaking into the attic or wall cavities
  • Rooms that struggle to stay comfortable
  • Dust being pulled into the system
  • Long run times or higher-than-expected energy use

When duct sealing may not fully solve the issue

  • Missing or poorly installed insulation
  • High Envelope Leakage
  • Design or installation issues elsewhere in the HVAC system
  • Some duct systems may be relatively tight but still perform poorly due to sizing, layout, airflow restrictions, or return air limitations.

As part of this process, we also pay attention to duct sizing, layout, overall condition, and airflow restrictions such as elevated static pressure. In some cases, sealing a duct system that is undersized, poorly designed, or severely deteriorated can make performance worse — not better. When that’s the case, we’ll explain what we’re seeing and why sealing alone may not be the right solution.

That’s why testing and inspection come first — to understand what will actually make a difference in your home.

Duct Leakage Testing & Professional Sealing

Find out whether duct leakage is contributing to comfort, air quality, or energy problems in your home — and what steps will actually improve them.

The goal is improved comfort, healthier living conditions, and better efficiency. In some situations, utility rebates may also be available and will be reviewed as part of your home evaluation.

Professional duct leakage testing and system evaluation starts at $99

for most single-system homes.

This includes whole-home leakage testing, duct leakage testing, airflow/static pressure evaluation, attic insulation inspection, and visual duct inspection.

Testing helps identify whether duct leakage, airflow design, insulation, or system performance is contributing to your comfort or efficiency concerns.

Homes with multiple HVAC systems may require additional testing. All findings and recommendations are reviewed before any repair work is discussed
